How to Measure GEO: Four Metrics That Reflect Change Earlier Than Traffic

In the zero-click era, traffic is a lagging indicator. What moves first is mention rate, citation rate, sentiment, and assisted conversion. Here is how to measure all four, and what counts as a passing score.

How to Measure GEO: Four Metrics That Reflect Change Earlier Than Traffic

Bottom line: traffic is a lagging indicator; mentions and citations in AI are leading indicators.

1. The Four Metrics

MetricHow to measureWhat to look at
Mention rateFix 30 questions and ask mainstream AI tools once a weekThe share of answers that mention your brand
Citation rateWhether the answer links to your official websiteThe share of answers that cite you as a source
SentimentScored manually or by a model (positive / neutral / negative)Whether you are described as an expert
Assisted conversionBranded search, direct visits, lead qualityWhether it drives follow-up actions

2. Why Use a Fixed Question Set

AI answers are never exactly the same each time. Only by fixing the questions and testing the same set every week can you see trends rather than noise. Split the question set into three layers: brand terms, category terms, and scenario terms.

3. Zero Clicks Does Not Mean Zero Value

Users may read the answer in AI and leave, but they remember who was recommended. This value shows up in branded search and in sales communication costs — by the time sales makes the first call, the prospect already knows what you do.

So when evaluating, watch at least two curves: AI mention rate and organic branded search volume. They usually move in the same direction.

4. Three Pitfalls to Avoid

① Looking at a single result: a single answer is heavily affected by time, region, and account;
② Only checking whether you were mentioned: being mentioned but described incorrectly is worse than not being mentioned at all;
③ Treating GEO as paid advertising: it does not stop the moment you stop investing, but it also does not deliver results as immediately as ads.

A pragmatic expectation: after content and technical changes, you can see movement in mention rate within 1 to 3 months; changes at the conversion level usually take longer.
