GEO and SEO

Whether SEO is still worth investing in after the rise of GEO is the question most frequently raised by cross-border procurement and foreign trade professionals.

People encountering the concept of GEO for the first time often ask: is SEO still necessary?

The conclusion is unambiguous: SEO has not lost its value, but on its own it can no longer meet the need.

The core outcome SEO pursues is higher visibility and click-through for web pages in search results. The aspects it focuses on include:

  • Whether keyword coverage is sufficient
  • Whether pages can be indexed smoothly
  • Whether the site architecture is reasonable
  • Whether link authority is sufficient
  • Whether visitors are willing to stay after clicking

The core outcome GEO pursues is to have brand information permeate the AI response layer. It cares more about:

  • Whether the model can quickly understand the page content
  • Whether the information presented is credible
  • Whether factual statements are clear enough
  • Whether the page can be broken down into quotable fragments
  • Whether the brand is presented in a positive and authoritative manner

Therefore, the difference between the two is not an opposition between "old" and "new", but rather that the final destination of information distribution differs.

The reason is that most AI search today does not fabricate answers out of thin air.

This also means that if a site has not even done conventional SEO well:

  • Pages cannot be crawled
  • Topic positioning is vague
  • Content lacks authority signals
  • The technical architecture is chaotic

Then it is likely also difficult for it to become a high-quality source favored by GEO.

In other words, SEO is the foundation, and GEO is the building structure on top of it.

SEO is closer to competing for a traffic entry point.

The most common approach is not to prepare two sets of content, but to implement layered optimization on the same content asset.

First, these need to be put in place:

  • Clear titles, descriptions and URL expressions
  • Pages can be crawled and indexed
  • Keywords and search intent align with each other
  • Smooth internal site structure and link paths
  • Loading speed and mobile experience meet standards

Then continue strengthening within the same page:

  • Provide the answer to the question right at the beginning
  • Organize information with lists, tables, FAQs and comparison modules
  • Cite data sources and define the scope of applicability of conclusions
  • Explain the entity relationships among brand, product, author and organization
  • Ensure any paragraph still stands when extracted on its own

Many teams' previous writing standard was "visually appealing, smooth to read, able to rank".

A more mature approach is not to set up a separate GEO task force, but to first drive the existing SEO, content, brand and product marketing teams to work collaboratively.

The division of labor can be as follows:

  • The SEO team handles crawling, structure, keywords, indexing and site health
  • The content team handles answer-first writing, case studies, citations and clarity of expression
  • The brand team handles unified brand narrative and external source placement
  • The product marketing team handles the factual quality of product pages, comparison pages, FAQs and industry pages

GEO is ultimately a cross-team project, and it will push companies to re-twist the threads of content, technology, brand and data into one strand.

If your site is currently still in the following state:

  • A large number of pages are not indexed
  • Technical problems keep emerging
  • Content quality is clearly insufficient
  • Basic keywords have no rankings at all

Then the priority is still to shore up the SEO foundation.

But if you have already accumulated a certain amount of content assets, especially the following pages:

  • Product pages
  • Solution pages
  • FAQ
  • Comparison pages
  • Definition and explanation pages
  • Industry insight pages

Then you should advance GEO upgrades as soon as possible, because such pages are the most likely to be selected by AI as answer material.

  • SEO determines whether you can be found, GEO determines whether you will be cited
  • GEO does not replace SEO; its focus is to make optimization work no longer stop at link rankings, but continue to extend into the answer generation stage
  • The same piece of content can serve both SEO and GEO, only the way it is expressed needs upgrading
  • The most effective path in the future is not choosing one of the two, but using SEO as the foundation and GEO as the amplifier

Placing GEO and SEO in opposition often leads execution teams into the wrong prioritization. A more reliable path is: first solidify the technical foundation of SEO, such as crawling, indexing, titles, internal links and structured data; then fill in the answer units, entity signals and third-party citations required by GEO. In other words, SEO solves "whether you can be found", and GEO solves "whether you will be included in the answer after being found". When the two work in coordination, the brand can both appear in link lists and be cited by AI summaries.

SEO usually focuses on organic traffic, keyword rankings, click-through rate and conversion rate; GEO should focus more on the proportion of brand mentions, the proportion of citations, zero-click exposure, sentiment tendencies in AI answers, and assisted conversions triggered by AI. A realistic situation is that some pages are not impressive at the traffic level, yet because of clear definitions, explicit structure and complete signals, they instead have higher citation value in AI scenarios. Therefore, GEO is not just a new traffic tactic; it requires teams to redefine "which pages are most important".

The white paper points out that many sources cited by AI are themselves often also at the top of traditional search. This shows that GEO does not overturn SEO, but takes SEO deeper: not only must pages rank, but content must also have "answer value that can be extracted". For enterprises, the best combination is usually "SEO lays the foundation, GEO acts as the amplifier".
